Circumcision is a safe procedure when performed by a qualified medical professional. However, as with any surgery, there is a small risk of complications, such as infection, bleeding, and scarring.

There are several different methods of circumcision. The most common method is to use a conventional sleeve technique using scalpel to make the incision and suture to perform the closure. The other techniques are by using clamps or a Stapling device. The stapler technique is a more recent innovation and uses a single procedure to stop bleeding, cut the excess foreskin and suture at the same time. Stapler techniques are used for different operations eg with bowel and are the gold standard for anastomosis.

The recovery time for circumcision is typically short. The procedure is a day case procedure and patients typically go home on the same day as the procedure. The incision will typically heal within a 3-4 weeks. There is commonly some discomfort for the initial few days and settles with standard pain killers.

The risks of circumcision are small. However, there is a small risk of infection, bleeding, and scarring. In rare cases, circumcision can also lead to complications such as meatal stenosis, which is a narrowing of the opening of the meatus. Cosmetic issues related to a circumcision are that of scar formation, skin tightening, residual foreskin or uneven appearance. The colour of the head of the penis may appear slightly different after circumcision and this may vary among individuals.

The high and tight circumcision: A larger amount of foreskin is removed resulting in a tighter appearance. The scar is typically positioned closer to the base of the penis. The low and loose circumcision or partial circumcision a shorter amount of foreskin is removed and typically will leave a fold of foreskin over the base of the glans penis.

Pain can be managed by taking paracetamol or some over-the-counter pain medications. Swelling and Bruising: Swelling and bruising around the surgical site are normal and may be more pronounced in the first few days. Applying ice packs (wrapped in a cloth) to the area intermittently can help reduce swelling. Activity Restriction: Rest and limited physical activity are often advised in the first few days to promote healing and reduce the risk of complications. First Week: Hygiene: Proper hygiene is crucial during the recovery period. Keep the wound dry and wash hands with soap before touching the wound. Avoiding Irritants: Patients are often advised to avoid activities that could irritate the surgical site, such as sexual activity and strenuous exercise, during the initial healing phase. Subsequent Weeks: Return to Normal Activities: Most patients can gradually return to normal activities, including work and exercise, as the healing progresses. The timeline for resuming normal activities varies among individuals. Residual Discomfort: Some residual discomfort or sensitivity may persist for a few weeks, but it generally improves over time. Long-Term Recovery: Scar Maturation: The appearance of the circumcision scar will evolve over several weeks to months as the tissues heal and the scar matures.
